Is a device stores like Marks and Sparks use to emit a high-pitched
whine unpleasant to the under-25s so they scarper!
Being just over 25 I think it's a very good idea, lol!

Lately, there's been a bit of a fuss over the use of this - obviously,
by its very nature it's an indiscriminate tool. I don't know if
stores like Marks and Sparks use them (although judging by the age
demographic last time I went in, it's quite possible!), but they are
being used in shopping centres, malls etc. So if it's switched on all
the time, it's disturbing so anyone under 25 years, including babies,
toddlers etc, who might be able to hear it. And, believe it or not,
there are under-25-year-olds who do not misbehave in stores or just
chat with their mates on public streets and shopping areas. The
argument is that it is unfair on these. I do have some sympathy with
this point of view, but I know equally of areas where one of these
devices would be a godsend. Why can't the PTB turn them on when the
undesirables gather?

That's exactly what happens in most places where they are used.

The Toronto Transit Commission plays classical music in subway stations
to discourage teenagers from loitering. It seems to work, although if
they have their iPods turned up loud they won't hear it - or anything
after a few years.

The downtown MacBloat's hose down the sidewalk every once in while, but only
when teenages or street people gather outside. Strange coincidence that.

A fiery horse with the speed of light, a cloud of dust, and a hearty
'Hi-ho Silver away!'
The theme music was the "cavalry charge" finale of Gioacchino
Rossini's William Tell Overture, now inseparably associated with the
series, which also featured many other classical selections as
incidental music including Wagner, Mendelssohn, Liszt, and
Tchaikovsky.
